SAS International designed and supplied 3345m2 of metal ceiling products to the prestigious University of Leeds, Nexus Building. Collaborating with Associated Architects & AHR Architects, a range of systems including suspended and linear ceilings, baffles and rafts were supplied to accommodate the different rooms and areas of the building.
Welcoming the building users is a well-designed and impactful reception area. Carrying out the installation for this whole project, subcontractor SCS Building Solutions fitted the creatively versatile SAS740 in this stunning space. Forming part of the linear range, SAS740 is chosen for its premium aesthetic as well as its capacity to intersperse with acoustic infill panels.
Finished in RAL9010 Pure White, the same system was also installed in the canteen area and business lounge forming design continuity. Complimented by black SAS330 infills panels in the latter areas, the monochrome design lends itself to the modern display of these spaces.
For the corridors leading to the seminar rooms, labs and lecture theatre, SAS205, a system designed specifically for corridor applications was specified. As the corridors accommodate open and semi-private rooms for meetings and study, acoustic performance was a key requirement. SAS205 panels were specified with a 27% open area and supported with an acoustic pad to control the unwanted noise.
For the 120-seat lecture theatre, the architects had envisioned a feature ceiling with an angled effect. To achieve this brief, a design featuring SAS200 was recommended. One of SAS’ most adaptable systems, SAS200 was the ideal solution for this bespoke application. Finished in RAL7036 Platinum Grey, SAS200 panels were designed at a 16-degree angle to create an angular effect, accomplishing the proposal requested by the architects.
The extensive offerings on the ground floor also include a 70-seat seminar space. As this room creates privacy using sliding partitions, it was important to choose a ceiling system that accommodated this layout as well as provided acoustic support. For this SAS specified the visually engaging SAS500 baffles which offer enhanced acoustic performance due to double faced panels. Able to be specified in different sizes and shapes, this system delivered on aesthetics, design and performance.
The second floor provides 12 research and study labs available for use by students and businesses. Forming part of our premium range, SAS330 was chosen for these rooms. Along with providing a clean and sleek aesthetic, SAS330 offers excellent acoustic performance which offers users a better work environment.
In completion, SAS also supplied SAS600 rafts to this purpose-built hub which connects business and academia. Following on from the initial design meeting with the architects, a new SAS600 raft design was proposed for rentable office spaces on floor two to five. The intent was to have a clear-cut ‘knife-edge’ detail to the edge of the raft which would see the return of the raft slope upwards. As well as delivering high acoustic performance, SAS600 was the ideal choice as it can accommodate the central C-profile which enables service integration within the raft. Once the design was agreed, mock-ups of the raft were supplied. Meeting the design and performance intents, a full order was placed.
Completed in early 2019, SAS International has showcased its metal ceiling expertise, high level of service, and support in supplying innovative, state-of-the-art designs to one of the world’s most prestigious higher education institutions.
