The complicated support structure of Roger Stirk Harbour + Partners’ Leadenhall Building posed a significant interior design challenge for HLW. With its iconic shape, the ‘Cheesegrater’ inspired the project design team to reflect the building’s external design features internally, adopting a triangular theme.
SAS International was specified for its technical design expertise and track record of achieving the highest aesthetic ideals. To achieve the complex equilateral theme, SAS200 and SAS330 were selected for a majority of the project to accommodate for the challenging 45° and 10° angles posed by the angled beams and floorplates.
In the foyer, corridor and seating areas, a concealed grid SAS200 was chosen to feature a distinctive square perforation and bronze-effect PPC finish. Overall, the final effect became one of corporate luxury and fine attention to detail.
Due to their complex configuration, the internal black steel beams proved particularly challenging to the ceiling composition in the open office area. A standard suspended ceiling system would not have achieved the high aesthetic demands. The solution was to adapt SAS330 into floating modules, ingeniously working around the complicated geometry of the interior. This approach gave the sense of a complete ceiling, whilst achieving a greater level of visual interest.
An additional specification was SAS810 Tricell, an open cell ceiling typically specified for smoke extraction applications. The triangular shape of the open cells perfectly complemented the overall aesthetic sought. Tricell was even adapted to accommodate a projector concealed within the ceiling when not in use. When needed, it slowly lowers from the ceiling by way of a remote controlled mechanism.
The triangular patterns created within the ceiling continues the aesthetic motif reflected in the project’s carpets, partitioning and glass manifestations. As demanded by Grade A office space, the SAS systems specified also achieved best in class acoustic performance.
