Crafting Calm in Transit: Acoustic Comfort Across Perth’s METRONET Rail Network
Perth’s METRONET project represents one of the most ambitious transport infrastructure undertakings in Western Australia’s history. The project delivered more than 25 km of new and upgraded rail, featuring eight newly constructed train stations, several revitalised bus interchanges and approximately 7 km of reimagined public spaces beneath elevated viaducts. These developments include the Thornlie–Cockburn Line, significant elevation of inner Armadale Line sections and new direct connections to Optus Stadium via the Mandurah Line.
SAS International’s SAS200 metal ceiling system was supplied for this large-scale public infrastructure project via our Western Australia based distributor, Progressive Materials. This extremely adaptable system was selected for its durable finish, clean lines and design flexibility and was specified and installed across all eight stations. The SAS200 system was also customised with tailored perforation patterns that not only aligned with each station’s unique visual identity but also delivered the acoustic performance required for these high-traffic transport environments.
Installing architectural ceiling systems across multiple rail sites posed complex coordination challenges. Each location had varying service integrations, including lighting, HVAC and surveillance, requiring ceiling panels to be highly adaptive. Progressive Materials worked closely with the ceiling contractors and design teams to ensure panels were tailored on a per‑station basis, often coordinating in compressed construction windows.
The modularity of SAS200 allowed for efficient on-site adjustments, while integrated acoustic insulation enhanced the commuter experience. Through dedicated technical support and logistical planning, Progressive Materials ensured consistent, on-time delivery across all station sites—supporting the broader success of this transformational infrastructure rollout.
The METRONET development not only strengthens urban connectivity but also enriches Perth’s public realm. Elevated rail lines reduce road congestion and improve safety, while the new station precincts introduce dynamic public spaces and community infrastructure. By supplying and supporting high-performance ceiling systems, Progressive Materials and SAS International contributed to an infrastructure solution that balances form and function for long-term public benefit.
