With a complex network of existing tunnels and sewers, the design for Liverpool Street Station makes the most of what little space is available. Maximising height in these constrained spaces was key to the architectural intent of this project, and SAS worked closely with main contractors Laing O’Rourke to deliver on this. Using large panels and linear lines, the ceilings SAS supplied offer a greater sense of scale and movement throughout the space. The design provides an attractive and modern environment for commuters as they manoeuvre their way through the station’s passageways to reach their destination.
SAS were tasked with supplying a linear ceiling for Liverpool Street Station required to be fully demountable to allow for easy access. Architect Wilkinson Eyre considered an acoustic solution for this project and proposed a soffit system with Class A acoustic absorption.
SAS delivered on this by supplying a hybrid aluminium SAS740 linear and SAS330 acoustic system to the station’s ticket hall. The acoustic, charcoal coloured ceiling was embellished with pale grey aluminium profiles that had to be specifically designed to maximise acoustic absorbency. The geometry of each extrusion is engineered to reflect noise upwards enhancing the acoustic performance, whilst still providing a visually calming aesthetic.
Perforated acoustic soffit linings were used down the length of the stairs, with a highly reflective PPC and symmetrically integrated lights. This purpose-built feature contains multiple electrical services and is also designed to be fully accessible with swing down 'butterfly-wing' hinged panels.

SAS740 is the most creatively versatile of SAS’ linear ceilings, able to accommodate complex geometry, extrusions and void access. Unlike other continuous linear profile systems, SAS740 can intersperse with acoustic infill panels.
SAS330 forms part of our premium offering with a host of value-added design elements. A profile suspended ceiling, the system is available in a tartan or linear grid form, suitable for any building module. Ceiling tiles can be of any shape, in up to 3m lengths and available in a variety of finishes.
