SSE Hydro, Glasgow’s spectacular performance arena recently became one of the world’s most desirable entertainment venues. Part of the redevelopment of Glasgow’s former docks, the arena joins the Clyde Auditorium on the northern edge of the River Clyde. Having won numerous design awards, the venue is well on the way to achieving the set goal of enhancing Glasgow. It also played a significant role in the hosting of Glasgow 2014, being the largest venue of the Commonwealth Games.

The 25,000 m², 12,500 capacity arena is the only one of its scale in the UK to date. A technically complex design was necessary to fulfil the architect’s vision for the interior space. SAS International worked in collaboration with Foster + Partners on the dynamic ceiling concepts, answering the brief for an aesthetic solution which provided acoustic control.

SAS supplied over 600m² of suspended ceiling SAS330 and over 900m² of bespoke architectural metalwork solutions, including Tubeline and acoustic baffles.

In the main entrance area, radiating acoustic linear baffles with a polished aluminium finish create a dynamic look, while anodised metal extrusions create a rib effect spanning the ceiling.

Elsewhere in the building, Tubeline creates a striking yet functional design allowing air to pass through the ceiling pane. This feature allows fire detection and control systems to be installed and operated, meeting the requirements for large open spaces.

Mike McLaughlin, managing director at Roskel Contracts Limited commented; “This was an extremely complex and challenging project, with a bespoke design required to exacting standards and additional pressures in terms of production and installation timescales. Throughout the process we worked in collaboration with SAS International to develop the design concepts, overcome production, setting out and installation challenges and ultimately deliver a unique high quality installation. Winning the AIS 2014 award with, in the words of the judges, ‘A superb, world class project’.”

SSE Hydro has won a number of awards to date, including:

  • Project of the Year at the AIS Awards
  • Supreme Award at the Glasgow Institute of Architects Awards
  • Most Stylish Entertainment Venue in 2013 at the Scottish Style Awards
  • RIAS 2014 annual award
