Ramsgate’s new Marlowe Academy, completed in June 2006, provides outstanding facilities under one roof for students and the local community. In addition to providing specialist facilities for all subject areas, it includes a dance, drama, music and recording studio. The academy also has a community library and an Adult Education Centre, allowing it to integrate into the local community with local sports, arts and community groups.

BDP,  the architects for the project specified a modern cost saving ceiling solution, as an alternative to a traditional suspended ceiling system, acoustic lighting rafts were used.

By leaving an open soffit for sustainable natural mass cooling significant capital installation cost savings were made. The acoustic treatment allows sound to be absorbed both through the perforations in the face panel and reflected sound from the structural soffit.

In the corridors SAS120 metal clip-in tiles were specified; they offered a robust finish whilst still allowing access to the ceiling void where required.

SAS600 rafts and modules are available in a range of curved, flat or angled profiles, a bespoke design service is also available. Manufactured from metal with a polyester powder coating the rafts have the same performance properties of more traditional suspended metal ceiling systems.  

They are a highly durable and easy to clean solution with an exceptional lifespan and minimal maintenance costs.  

Acoustic rafts not only offer a modern, but also a cost effective, ‘fit for purpose’ solution for the educational building sector and have been specified in an increasing number of projects.
