Reserving New Zealand’s Documentary Heritage

Designed by Warren and Mahoney, with cultural design collaboration from Tihei, Te Rua Archives New Zealand is a significant addition to Wellington’s Parliamentary precinct. Delivered by Dexus in partnership with the Department of Internal Affairs, the new 26,500 m² facility provides a purpose-built home for the preservation and conservation of New Zealand’s documentary heritage. The architectural approach extends into the interior, where the ceiling follows the building’s geometry, including raked sections that sweep upwards above the staircase before continuing across the ceiling plane.

Testimonial

“Te Rua Archives needed to meet exceptionally high-performance requirements.”

“It also needed to feel appropriate to the role it plays in New Zealand’s civic landscape. The result is a building of real discipline. It is secure, resilient and highly specialised, yet still connected to place, culture and public life.”

Bespoke Metal Ceilings Shaped to the Architecture

SAS International supplied a highly customised SAS200 Mesh ceiling system alongside Trucell, with the mesh ceiling finished in Gold Kinetic. SAS200’s concealed grid and adaptable hook-on format supported the bespoke application, allowing the ceiling to respond to the changing geometry of the interior while retaining access to the ceiling void. Curved sections and panels accommodating changes in angle and alignment required extensive drawing reviews and careful coordination between SAS International and the project team. The resulting mesh installation brings texture and depth to the interior while following the raked ceiling geometry above the staircase and across the wider ceiling plane. Trucell was also supplied for the project, providing an open cell ceiling solution within the overall scheme.
